Cooling towers can be subject to accidents due to blade or gearbox breakage.

Continuous monitoring of this type of machine is recommended. In fact, most cooling tower manufacturers install some machinery protection system in new installations.
In cooling towers it is recommended to install vibration sensors in the gearbox to detect faults in the air-cooling machinery and even stop the machine when dangerous vibration levels are reached.
The vibration level can be monitored from the plant's Distributed Control System via a 4-20 mA connection.
Furthermore, the vibration sensor mounted on the gearbox provides the dynamic signal of the key point to help the analyst diagnose the machine's condition. This dynamic signal can be recorded by a vibration collector for predictive maintenance and analyze the vibration in the predictive diagnostic software.
