Air gap monitoring is mainly applied in hydraulic generating sets. The generators of these units are characterized by their low rotational speed (60-333 rpm), large number of poles (100-18) and large rotor dimensions.
Online monitoring systems allow to detect anomalies at an early stage and to plan corrective actions. The combination of the AirGap measurement with the usual measurements (vibration, temperatures, etc.) and the correlation with the process variables (Active Power, Reactive Power, etc.) allows the early detection of faults.
